13 - YeeHaw Newsletter: Social Distancing Before It Was Cool

What’s up, y’all? It has been a while since the last newsletter. I hope this finds everyone safe and quarantined. I’ve had a bit of extra time due to this social distancing and working from home, so I was able to assemble another newsletter. Plus, you might have some extra time on your hands as well. So fix yourself a quarentini and dive in.

As always, if you know anyone that would like to subscribe, please send them to YeeHaw.io.

The best TV show you’ve never heard of

Dark is a Netflix sci-fi series that takes place in a small German town within the Black Forest. The show centers around a group of high schoolers. And after one of them goes missing, the town scrambles to understand how a kid can disappear without a trace and the only clue is that something similar occurred a generation earlier. This isn’t horror, though the trailer presents it as so. It is more of a suspenseful thriller that can be creepy occasionally. The first two seasons (10 episodes each; hour-long episodes) are available now, with the third coming out later this year. If you are looking for something a little different, really well-executed, and a bit of a mind-bender, this show is what you are looking for. This came highly recommended by my friend, Ben. I found that it was interesting enough through the first few episodes, but later in the first season, things sped up and the show only continues to get better as the story unfolds.

Modern laundry cleaner

HEX is a laundry detergent designed for clothes, such as activewear, that contain synthetic materials. Traditional detergents work fine with cotton, but I noticed some of my nicer workout clothing didn’t smell as clean as they should with typical detergent. I tried HEX and that hasn’t been an issue since. HEX also claims that it helps maintain the fabrics’ strength, stretch, and sweat-wickability, though I cannot personally confirm this. It comes in many scents and is available on Amazon (2 bottles for $24) or on their website for $10/bottle.

The worst video game of all time

(Podcast)

In this 26-minute podcast, 99% Invisible investigates the legend of the worst video game ever. Apparently the game was so bad that it killed Atari. And they hated it so much that they buried all unsold copies (which presumably was a lot) in the middle of the desert. At least, that is the legend. (Podcast URL; Apple Podcasts)

Wanna own a Bob Ross painting?

Apparently you can’t. The public TV personality and meme hero’s work has disappeared…and demand is growing for it. In this 10-minute video from the NY Times, they find all of Bob Ross’s works and discover why they are not for sale. (YouTube Link)

The new MTV Cribs

Men’s Health has a YouTube series where they interview celebrities by taking a tour through their fridge and their gym. Each episode is 10-minutes and is good light entertainment. I enjoyed the episode with Kumail Nanjiani, but you can browse the whole catalog here, which includes Tom Brady, Kevin Hart, Arnold, and many more. (YouTube Link)

A tour through elementary school memories

This Twitter thread is a feed of many weird games, cartoons, and school supplies that, at least for me, occupied an important role in my life for a short period and hadn’t been referenced in my memory since. Fellow Millennials might have some elementary school flashbacks while scrolling through. (Twitter Link then click “Expand this thread”)

Your new gym

(at home)#coronagainz

Many are now looking for ways to get a good workout without access to their gym. I have been able to recreate a relatively good “home gym” for under $100 and expect to at least maintain most of my strength through quarantine. I did this largely through resistance bands, which can easily replace most movement you would make in a free-weight workout. After some research, I settled on Lifeline Resistance Bands because they are durable and allow you to vary the resistance from light to heavy resistance by adding multiple bands together. With their system, you purchase a pair of handles, which can hold up to three separate bands. Then you combine bands of 10lbs, 20lb, 30lb, 60lb etc. in resistance together to fit your need. So a 60lb band added to a 40lb band is 100lbs of resistance. And that 100lbs is applied to both arms or legs that you are exercising (so 200lbs of total resistance). Because of this, you only need a few bands of varying resistance to create many weigh combinations. Lifeline resistance bands go up to 100lbs for a single band, so you can still do very heavy weight training. This is what you would need to get started (if you can’t get the items from Amazon, you can always go to the brand’s website instead):

  • Handles ($15 for 2) You might want to get two sets so you can rotate between multiple exercises more easily without switching out the bands each time

  • Bands ($8-20 each) I have a 20, 30, 40, 60 and two 90s. But have found the 90s are very difficult to get into the handles because they are thicker. If you can double up a couple 50 or 60lb bands, that would be easier to get to heavier resistances.

  • Door anchor ($5) This allows you to set up the bands at a stationary pull or push point. You can see how it works here.

Optional

  • Resistance Bar ($30) This item appears to be sold out at the moment (look at the far right item on this page, which is for just the bar and not the whole system), but I assume they will restock. This is a bit of a hack….if you combine this bar with the carabiners (listed below), you can attach these to the bands and handles above to do your squats and presses with a bar, if that is your preference.

  • Carabiners ($16 for 2) These are just to attach the bar above to the Lifeline handles and bands.

  • Jump Rope ($8) This isn’t fancy and probably isn’t the best jump rope you can get. But it is super cheap and a good weight and length to get in some great cardio and leg exercise with limited space.

MUSIC CORNER

Since the last YeeHaw, a lot of music has been released. Instead of spreading my music recommendations over many newsletters, I’ve decided to catch up by throwing everything I listened to in the latter half of 2019 and early 2020 into a single playlist. Normally, this might be overwhelming, but I’m guessing you may be in the need for more tunes than usual. Hopefully, you find this 100-song playlist manageable.

You can find the full playlist on Spotify HERE.

This playlist has a lot of great songs across many genres. In the past eight months, there were many great songs or albums with a few solid songs that I included. But for albums…below are a few notable artists featured in this playlist with albums you might want to check out:

  • Bleached - Don’t You Think You’ve Had Enough? Bleached is comprised of two sisters from LA. They have a rock/pop style and this is their third album. It is stacked with catchy songs.

  • Kishi Bashi - Omoiyari Kish Bashi is an American multi-instrumentalist and singer, who also is a member of the band of Montreal (one of my faves). Omoiyari is actually the soundtrack to a documentary created by Kishi Bashi under the same name. The doc as about incarcerated Japanese-Americans during WWII. Though that may imply the album is quite somber, it is actually very poppy and light in sound.

  • (Sandy) Alex G - House of Sugar (Sandy) Alex G is a singer-songwriter out of Philly. He reminds me a lot of Elliott Smith, but with less depressing lyrics.

  • Stranger Ranger - Remembering the Rockets Formerly Sioux Falls, Stranger Ranger is an indie band out of Portland, OR and is their third album. It is great to work to.

  • Whitney - Forever Turned Around This group is out of Chicago and is made up of a few members formerly part of the Smith Westerns. They describe their music as "think Bon Iver, with elements of folk and country, only given a Chicago soul makeover". Forever Turned Around is a really pretty album.

  • Selena Gomez - Rare You know, I’ve never listened to a Selena Gomez album before. And I probably couldn’t have identified one of her songs by hearing it prior to checking out her new album. But this thing is a solid collection of pop songs.

CRAZY TRUE CRIME PODCAST (itunes link) - This crazy true tail, narrated by Neil Strauss, leads us through the investigation into a young actress/model that disappeared in 2018. This is one of those cases where the details unfold during the creation of the podcast, so a lot of heavy stuff goes down while being recorded. I am not partial to true crime, but this is an exception. There are 10 episodes and each is about 30 minutes long. So knock it out during your commute this week.

mountain-of-hell4.jpg

CRAZIEST BIKE CRASH EVER (YouTube) - Mountain of Hell is an annual downhill bike race at a ski resort in France. 700 racers go wheel-to-wheel in a 15-mile course down snow, ice, rock, and single-track. This year, the race doesn’t start out very well, as there is a massive wreck during a huge descent. Miraculously there were no reported injuries.

WHAT MAKES BOURBON BOURBON? (Men’s Journal) - Do you know what makes a bourbon different from other whiskeys? No, it does not have to made in Kentucky. Considering how popular bourbon is, it is suprising how nobody really knows what makes it different. This 2-minute read gives you the 6 requirements to be a bourbon…obviously the most important being that it must be from ‘Merica.

3 soccer players vs 100.jpg

WHO WOULD YOU BET ON? (Twitter) - Ever wonder who would win between 3 professional soccer players and 100 kids? Well, Japan did. Here is a 30-second clip of the first point.

Cicada 3301.jpg

WHAT WAS/IS CICADA 3301? (YouTube) - Cicada 3301 is the name given to a group or individual that in 2012 started a mysterious and cryptic puzzle game on the internet. The puzzles, heavily focusing on data security, cryptography, and steganography, were posted across the internet with the believed intent of recruiting top thinkers. This is known to be one of the most elaborate and greatest mysteries of the internet age. This 17-minute video guides you through what is known of Cicada 3301.

gopro swiss alps proximity flight.jpg

SWISS ALPS WINGSUIT FLYING (Vimeo) - This GoPro Award winning video is of flyer Brendan Weinstein taking on Weisshorn peak in the Swiss Alps for a nerve-racking 1.5-minute trip to safety from a helicopter. I will enjoy from the safety of my computer, thank you very much.

Tiki Party.jpg

MUSIC CORNER - Are you in the need for some great tunes in to head into the latter part of summer. Look no further. I assembled a tiki-themed playlist that is fit for almost any occasion. Tiki party? Birthday Party? Wedding? Bat Mitzvah? I have you covered, because Tiki is life.

Also, I have some newer music for a YeeHaw playlist. Most of these tunes are from 2019, with a few older ones that are new to me. As usual, there is a strong presence of rock, electro pop, indie, a little rap. But also some pop from Carly Rae Jepsen and Lizzo, and plenty of other surprises. Lots of good music coming out this year, making it very easy to assemble a killer playlist. This one is pretty massive (45 songs; 2 hours 44 minutes. Please enjoy.

A few artists/albums I want to call out on this playlist:

  • Stephen Malkmus - Groove Denied - This album was originally recorded in 2005 and wasn’t released until this year, largely because the record label didn’t think the time was right for its release (for a very long time). This album is full of great psychedelic and garage rock and I feature many songs in the playlist and start things off with my favorite one

  • Vampire Weekend - Father of the Bride - I haven’t enjoyed a Vampire Weekend album since maybe their first album in 2008. But Father of the Bride brought me back. Lots of good poppy hits on this one

  • Wand reminds me of a more upbeat Radiohead (recommended by my friend Blake)

  • Mr Little Jeans isn’t new, but her music is new to me. She makes you want to dance (recommended by my friend Laura A)

  • The French 79 song isn’t new either, but I discovered this song from a Cadillac commercial which runs constantly during the Tour de France

  • Dope Lemon’s Marinade and Bug Thief’s Cattails are songs that I think are fit for any situation

11 - Spring Break Edition

Hey hey hey,

I have some goodies for everyone in this YeeHaw. Over the past two months, I have scoured the internet to bring you a number of interesting findings. Particularly, I have listened to a ton of new music to create the deepest YeeHaw playlist yet—deep in quality and quantity. Laura Medina, of huge music snobbery, commented “This is YeeHaw’s best new music playlist by far. Nothing weird or annoying and every song is good.” So there you have it. Check it out below.

I have recently been analyzing my website analytics, which led me to a very interesting finding. There is a song called Old Town Road by Lil Nas which happens to be the #1 song in America. Not my thing but whatever. There is a lyric where “Yee Yee juice” is referenced, which apparently when drank, turns one into a cowboy. A meme started where people play the song and create a video of them transforming into a cowboy (YouTube video). It seems as though people mistakenly search “YeeHaw Juice” and end up at YeeHaw.io. I have had an unusual number of new signups for the newsletter recently. Probably not my target audience, but still…thank you, Lil Nas.

As always, if you know anyone that would like to subscribe, please send them to YeeHaw.io.

Flat earth crossing.jpg

FLAT EARTHERS HEADED TO THE EDGE (Article) - The growing group of theorists that believe the earth is flat are headed to Antartica to prove their theory, once and for all. This Forbes article explains their plan and why they believe this will prove they are right. Good luck to them.

ColinO'Brady.jpg

CROSSING ANTARCTICA, ALONE (Podcast) - Speaking of Antartica, recently Colin O’Brady became the first person to cross the frozen continent unsupported. That means that he was dropped off and did not see nor receive support from anyone until he completed his 54-day trek…though controversy has risen because he traveled over roads, which means the “unsupported” claim is being challenged (Flatearthers obviously take issue with O’Brady’s claims as well). Either way, in this podcast he discusses his training, diet, and how he was able to travel almost 1,000 miles alone in the harshest conditions on the planet.

Camera Cover.jpg

COMPUTER CAMERA COVER (Amazon Link - $10) - Maybe you can’t relate, but if you have ever panicked when working from home and because you called into a conference call on your computer, only to realize that you had not showered all day and were not the most presentable and had no idea if others on the call could see you on your computer camera, then you should check out this camera cover. It is very easy to install (just stick over your camera) and you can slide the cover to the side at the time you want to be seen. Otherwise, you are safe to work from home and live your life without regrets.

appalachian trail.jpg

THE FASTEST COMPLETION OF THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL, CAUGHT ON VIDEO (YouTube Link - 14 minutes) - Here is another inspiring story that you can actually watch unfold. Joe ‘Stringbean’ McConaughy recently set the world record for the fastest (both supported and unsupported) time to complete the Appalachian Trail at 45.5 days, crushing previous records by 10 hours. And he recorded and narrated his journey.

THE EVOLUTION OF GYMNASTICS - I have two short gymnastics clips:

  • 1950s vs Today (Twitter Link) - This 41-second video shows how gymnastics has dramatically changed since the 1950s

  • Banned Skills (YouTube Link) - In this 5-minute video, we see many gymnastic skills that have been forbidden due to the high risk of injury when performing them. The Korbut Flip (the first example in the video) and many of the other uneven bar moves are my favorites

Mike Krol

Mike Krol

MUSIC CORNER - I have a super good new-music playlist and a few album recommendations for ya!

  • New Music Playlist - This 37-song playlist runs a little over 2 hours and is the best of 2019 music so far (in my opinion), plus a few 2018 songs I am late to the party on. Mostly, it is really good indie-rock. Not to oversell, but there has been much better new music so far this year than in all of 2018, I think. A few notes:

    • Mike Krol, Deerhunter, and Beirut have each released amazing new albums, so I have a heavy mix of their stuff in this playlist (plus their album recs are below)

    • Little Simz is a super smooth rapper from London with a few songs here

    • There are a lot of good new female rockers on this list

    • Wild Pink remind me a lot of Tom Petty

    • Yep, and Ariana Grande song made the list as well

  • New High Rotation Album Recommendations:

    • DeerHunter’s Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared? (Spotify Link) - I have never been able to fully get into Deerhunter because they have been a little too weird for me. But that has changed with their newest album, which is much more approachable. This album is much more poppy and reminds me a bit of Of Montreal’s The Sunlandic Twins in terms of the transition to a more listener friendly sound

    • Mike Krol’s Power Chords (Spotify Link) - Mike Krol is a graphic designer and power pop rocker from LA. Power Chords is a collection of super catchy garage rock songs. Reminds me a bit of The Strokes

    • Beirut’s Gallipoli (Spotify Link) - I liked Beirut once, but then got tired of them and haven’t listened to them in almost 10 years. But Gallipoli revitalised any enthusiasm I lost for Beirut and I think this could be their best album. If you haven’t heard Beirut before, I describe their sound as indie folk with horns and a ukulele thrown in

10 - Happy MLK and 2019!!

I hope everyone is having a great 2019 so far. Mine has been particularly lazy after a busy end of year. 2019 is also the first time I’ve ever had MLK off, which only adds to the total laziness of my year. I have lots of best-of-2018 lists here because everyone loves best-of lists. Plus lots of memes.

BEST NFL CELEBRATIONS OF 2018 (Link) - A year ago, the NFL relaxed its rules on celebrations. The result was NFL players flexing their creativity and a new trend in group celebrations after touchdowns. This New York Times article lists out the more popular celebrations. My favorites came from the Bears and the Vikings. If any of the links to videos are broken, you can watch them on the YouTube link in the article.

watchmen1.jpg

A SUPER FUN READ (Amazon Link) $9.99 - I recently read Watchmen by Alan Moore (also known for V for Vendetta and others). This has been on my to-do list since college, which gives you a sense of how much of a procrastinator I can be. The 12 books (each is a very quick read) cover the story of a group of retired crime fighters, and their complicated personal lives, as they band together when they individually fall under attack. Released in the late 80s, the mature story includes plenty of commentary on social and political issues while mocking the superhero concept. Watchmen is argued to be one of the best graphic novels of all time. If, like me, you have few of these reads under your belt, this wouldn’t be a bad place to start. Also, in 2009 there was a feature film (imdb link) and, this year, HBO (link) is creating a new show based on the graphic novel.

conversion van.jpg

MUSIC - When I was working on my 80s new wave playlist that I mentioned in YeeHaw 8, I also started working on an 80s power ballad playlist. I really wanted to find a group of songs similar to Total Eclipse of the Heart. All of these songs remind me of those we listened to when I was a kid in my mom’s giant conversion van, which served as inspiration of the title of this playlist. Let me know what you think.

This article is a good piece that breaks down what happens when your body processes carbs, fat, and protein to help prioritize certain food types based on your diet objectives.

Cheap flights.jpg

HOW TO FIND THE CHEAPEST INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS - (Article) I look at cheap flights every day. I have read numerous articles on how to find deals but they all say the same thing…be flexible, signup for certain credit cards, etc…nothing very helpful. A couple weeks ago I came across this article and it has changed how I look for flights. One of their tips…get a VPN and set your IP location to a country with a relatively low cost of living. Your search results will likely be cheaper than what you see in the US. I have tested this and found flights about 33% cheaper than the comparable US flights.

RhoneLogo2017.png

MY FAVORITE ATHLETIC APPAREL - (Rhone website) I am always looking for comfortable workout clothes, especially those that fit and look how I want. Recently while at REI, I tried a few articles from Rhone, a premium men’s athletic apparel company, and now it is all I am asking for this holiday season. I have tried some of their shorts and shirts and they are, by far, the most comfortable clothes I own. For workouts/runs, they are great in terms of comfort and breathability. They dry fast and, so far, are very durable. Aside from their comfort, all shorts/pants have the perfect number of pockets, with secure places for your phone, wallet, or whatever else you would carry on your way to/from the gym. This gear also doubles well as travel attire. On a recent trip for a week, I used a single pair of shorts for the entire trip and they performed as well as I could have imagined. The only downside is that their stuff is expensive. But you likely can find some 20-30% off coupons online and they occasionally run sales. I size down with their shirts (normally wear a medium but I wear a small with Rhone), but their shorts are true to what I normally buy.

Outkast.jpg

MUSIC - A couple of playlists:

  • Outkast Greatest Hits - Earlier this year I decided to revisit Outkast. I listened to their hits growing up but never appropriately checked out their discography. I finally learned what all the hype was about. In my naive opinion, they are the greatest hiphop act of all time. So I created a playlist of my favorite songs. My tops picks are Chonkyfire and Slump.

  • YeeHaw 9 - I got 19 songs here of some of the newer stuff I have liked. The Richard Swift songs are really universally likable. Check those out. Kero Kero Bonito, Spiritualized, and BROCKHAMPTON all have good new albums and I included a sampling in this playlist…plus many more.

MEMES - Some laughs…

Sleep Master

Sleep Master

GET BETTER SLEEP - A few years ago I was living in an apartment with a lot of natural light, a great feature until you want to sleep longer than the sun. I opted for a sleep mask to help me out. After trying a few different masks, I discovered the Sleep Master Sleep Mask. What makes this mask better than all the others is that it is softer and more comfortable, it blocks light around the nose much better, and it wraps over the ears. If it shifts a little during the night, it manages to cover your eyes fine and is still comfortable somehow. This thing has helped me sleep in conditions such as long flights or bright rooms where I otherwise would have been unhappily whinny and sleep deprived. Add in some ear plugs and you can sleep almost anywhere. ($22)

WHAT MAKES A KUNG FU MOVIE? - Kung fu films have always seemed really cool to me (probably because I still have hopes to one day be a ninja) but I haven’t seen many of them. I plan to change this in the near future. This short video, narrated by a MoMa film curator, is a primer on Kung Fu. It explains the meaning of the word, how it applies to film, shows some of the greatest kung fu masters, and explains what makes them so impressive. (9 minutes)

Podcast

Podcast

A CRAZY, TRUE STORY (Podcast) - True crime podcasts aren’t really my thing. But Laura introduced me to Dr. Death and this 6-episode show is so engrossing. Each episode is about 40 minutes and I listened to the whole thing in a day. I could not stop. It covers the story of a neurosurgeon with such horrific surgical outcomes that it was unclear if he was intentionally harming his patients…pretty scary stuff.

Sharp Objects.jpg

CREEPY THRILLER (Show) - How about a creepy thriller in video form? Check out HBO’s Sharp Objects. Based on the Gillian Flynn (also known for Gone Girl) book, this series is about a journalist going back to her dysfunctional small hometown to investigate the recent murder of a young girl. This stirring 8-part series is pretty dark and twisted…so…you have been warned.

Quip.jpg

THE TOOTHBRUSH YOU’VE SEEN EVERYWHERE ONLINE (Link)- You likely have seen ads for Quip, the inexpensive electric toothbrush, and probably wondered how this thing is so cheap and if it does anything. Me too. I got it and…I fully recommend it. Here is the deal, you buy the toothbrush ($25), they send you a new brush head and batteries every 3 months ($5), and that is it. Never think about getting a new toothbrush again. Plus, the thing has a 2-minute timer and signals you every 30 seconds for you to move to another area of your mouth. I have never, in my life, brushed for 2 minutes prior to owning this toothbrush, but have every time since. Yes, you could set a timer. But do you? No, you don’t. And you never will. Unless you get this thing. You still have to actually brush your teeth some (I think that is the case with all electric toothbrushes), but this thing takes out much of the effort.

Mr Rogers.jpg

MAYBE SOMETHING MORE UPBEAT - I recently watched Won’t You Be My Neighbor? and was surprised at how moving it is. I never watch Mr Rogers as a kid because, frankly, I thought his show was boring. So I didn’t think I would have much of an appreciation for this documentary. But you cannot help but be touched by the story of Fred Rogers, who I learned is likely one of the most genuine people that has ever been on television.

80s Tapes.jpg

MUSIC - I present you with two playlists and one album recommendation this time.

  • We can dance if we want to - I am especially proud of this. I been on a big 80s kick and love 80s new wave, so decided to make a playlist of my favorites. This thing is 118 songs and counting. I have been listening to it on repeat nonstop for the past two weeks. I hope you enjoy it. A few disclaimers:

    • This is an 80s new wave playlist, but a few songs may not be considered new wave. In fact, not all songs are even from the 80s. You could, therefore, argue that this is simply, a playlist. Maybe so. Please just go with it

    • No, there is no such thing as too much Tears for Fears

  • YeeHaw 8 - 14 songs of what I have been listening to recently. Mostly new stuff, but a couple not new songs. This playlist largely includes some old faces that recently released new albums (Gorillaz, Interpol, Santigold) but also has some new faces

  • Best Kids - Best Coast is an indie rock band from LA. They recently released an album of kids songs, and it is really great. Ice Cream Mountain is my favorite. The album is included in Prime Music

7 - Don't Call It a Comeback

Friends - it has been a while, but I found time to get out another YeeHaw. I'll work harder to get these back on a regular schedule. In the spirit of the World Cup (Congrats, France!), which is one of my favorite sporting events, a lot of the content today is soccer related.

As always, if you know anyone that would like to subscribe, please send them to YeeHaw.io.

A BETTER LUNCHBOX (Link)- I often take my lunch to work and carry it in a plastic Target bag or one of Laura's Lululemon bags. This isn't ideal for many reasons, so I thought a dry-bag might be a better solution. Dry-bags are small, seal up so nothing can leak in our out, and can be attached to things, like a computer bag. It is super convenient to put in my food and strap this thing to my computer bag then head to work without forgetting my lunch or worrying about contents falling out. I went with a small ($16)

THE HISTORY OF THE SOCCER BALL (Article) - In this article, 99% Invisible (which also happens to be one of my favorite podcasts) explains the history of the soccer ball and how television has influenced its look, feel, materials, and therefore soccer itself.

Old Soccer Ball.jpg

THE MOST AMAZING SOCCER STADIUMS IN THE WORLD (Article) - The Atlantic has a series of images of some of the most unique soccer fields across the planet, from the Swiss Alps to giant blocks of ice in Greenland. I think my favorite is the floating field in Thailand, although kicking the ball out of bounds would be a huge issue.

NEVER WORRY ABOUT YOU GRAMMAR AGAIN (App) - I've been using the app Grammarly for a couple of years now to minimize my typing mistakes, which I can be prone to make. It functions as a plug-in to your browser and identifies spelling and grammar mistakes as you type, and can quickly show you definitions or synonyms. In addition, you get a weekly report of your grammar performance compared to other Grammarly users. (Free)

TOUR DE FRANCE EXPLAINED (Video) - Now that the World Cup is over, check out the Tour De France, which goes on through July. If, like me, you think this race is kinda confusing to watch (what is a peloton? what is the significance of the yellow jersey? etc.), this video explains everything you need to know. (10 minutes)

MUSIC (Playlist Spotify Link) - I'm trying something a little different this time. Instead of recommending albums, I have made a playlist of some of my favorite songs over the past couple of months. This is largely driven by the fact that I haven't found many new albums that a really like, but have come across plenty of individual songs. The only exceptions to this...I really like Cardi B's Invasion of Privacy. I think almost every song on that album could be a top-20 hit. I also like Kanye's ye, which is only 7 songs and is lyrically intense, but very good. A few notes on this playlist:

  • Kanye's Ghost Town and MorMor's Heaven's Only Wishful are my favorite songs over the past few months
  • If you miss The Cranberries, check out Hatchie
  • I have never liked Drake, but he has a few really good songs on his recent album Scorpion
  • Warning - Many of the songs have graphic lyrics
  • 15 songs, 62 minutes

MEMES - Got lots for you

6 - March Madness

Well, I took a little time off to start 2018 and recover from UGA's National Championship loss to Alabama. Then the Winter Olympics were a distraction. Now it is March Madness but I had UVA winning it all, so my bracket is done - I have few distractions now...back to the newsletter.

In other news, my buddy Chris stumbled across this superiorly named beer from Johnson City, TN. Pick some up if you are in the area.

SNACKS - When I get hungry during the day, I want tasty and filling, but also reasonably healthy. Here are a few of my favorite snacks:

  • RX Bars (Link) - These run $26 for a 12-pack and come in a large variety of flavors. Ingredients are very simple (egg whites, nuts, dates) and they taste great. I've had every flavor and all are good, but the chocolate varieties are the best, in my opinion. Each bar is 220 calories, 10g fat, 22g carbs, 12g protein, and 12g sugars. You can find these online in many places including Amazon and at many grocery stores
  • EPIC Bars (Link) - These run $30 for a 12-pack and come in a variety of meats and flavors. EPIC Bars are like thick jerky or bacon. I like the Bison Uncured Bacon-Cranberry bar the most, though others are also very good. Each bar is 130 calories, 8g fat, 8g carbs, 7g protein, and 6g sugars. You can find these online in many places including Amazon and at many grocery stores
  • EXO Bars (Link) - These run $36 for a 12-pack. EXO uses cricket (yes, cricket) protein to make their bars. Crickets require significantly fewer resources to harvest and contain a much higher amount of protein per volume when compared to about any other protein source. Plus, these bars taste great - seriously. I like Cocoa Nut and Blueberry flavors, though PBJ and Banana Bread are also good. Each bar is 310 calories, 20g fat, 23g carbs, 10g protein, and 13g sugars. I haven't seen these in a grocery store but they are available online including Amazon

THE BEST TASTING VODKA (Article, Podcast) - The article is a 5-minute read that traces the recent history of vodka in the US and explains how in the past 50 years the spirit went from relatively unknown and largely disliked in the US to the highest selling spirit in the country. The podcast is from Planet Money (NPR). In this 20-minute episode, they cover how vodka is made and fill you in on the secrets of quality and taste between vodka brands. In short, you are paying for the brand with expensive vodkas.

BETTER GYM SHORTS (Link) - About two years ago I found Birddogs and wasn't sure they were for me with their preppy finance bro marketing. But their lead designer was previously at Lululemon and after giving them a try they immediately won me over. Birddogs are now my gym short of choice for a few reasons:

  • They have a boxer-brief liner and therefore are super comfortable
  • Pockets have zippers in the back and fit perfectly for your phone and wallet. These back pockets are on the side so you don't actually sit on the contents
  • Each color combo comes in 3 lengths to choose from, so folk like me that like a shorter short have that option
  • At $55, these things are not too expensive. I have had a few pairs for over a year now and all are still in great shape
  • The exterior of many styles are made from cotton and are acceptable as casual shorts outside of the gym

Birddogs are ideal for weightlifting and cross training. They could be used as running shorts, but are not ideal given the extra weight they carry due to the pockets and thicker fabrics. Only for dudes as of now.

CYBERPUNK TV SHOW (Link) - I really enjoy cyberpunk dystopian settings (like Bladerunner) in movies and TV and Netflix released a newer 10-episode show call Altered Carbon fitting that bill. The show gives an interesting take on what the future may look like about a prisoner brought back to life in a different body to solve a murder mystery. I don't want to give much away but definitely worth checking out. WARNING - this show is very graphic in terms of nudity and violence.

THE TRUTH ABOUT CRYONICS (Article) - Speaking of being brought back to life, ever wondered what the deal is with being cryogenically frozen? How much does it cost? Who provides this service? Lucky for you, this article explains all of those details. It's a long but interesting read. And being frozen is way cheaper than I expected at $35,000. This article is a how-to guide, a history lesson, and a philosophical read.

THE FIRST EVER NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC VIDEO (Video) - This short video shows footage of the disastrous 1902 Ziegler polar expedition and is the first time National Geographic started to shoot documentaries in the field. In this expedition, the team was attempting to become the first to reach the North Pole. I enjoy seeing the sled dogs and the team roughhouse and mess around with each other. In that sense, not much has changed. (2:32)

HOW CARNIVALS SCAM YOU (Video) - We all know carnival games are stacked against us, but I was never sure how all the games are rigged. This video explains how some of the most popular games are presented to deceive you. (11.36)

WEIRD PHOTOS FROM THE ATLANTIC'S ARCHIVE (Article) - The Atlantic's Alan Taylor shares some of the gems found in the archives. These photos are a hodgepodge of historic images depicting space travel, filmmaking, horseplay, and more. (34 photos)

MUSIC - I have a number of recommendation this time. These first two albums are both very good and I had a hard time listing a reasonable number of songs, so if you like what you hear you should check out the whole album.

A band with a fun and unique sound is The Go! Team (Wikipedia Link). They are from the UK and are classified as indie-pop but their sound resembles a cheer squad or high school band. They have been around since 2004 and each of their five albums is great. Their fifth, Semicircle (Spotify Link), was released in January and is a lot of fun. Some of my favorite songs include:

A band I recently discovered is The Jungle Giants (Wikipedia Link). They are from Australia and remind me a lot of Miike Snow, although one song sounds just like Television's (the band) Marquee Moon. Their third album, Quiet Ferocity (Spotify Link), was released last summer. Check out these songs:

After last YeeHaw's synthwave suggestions, my buddy Louis recommended a playlist called Synthwave from Space (Spotify Link). It is very good, so if you like that stuff you should check it out.

Lastly, this past week I came across a unique music collection from Scott Bradlee. He, with a large group of contributors, created an album of pop-song covers in the spirit of doo-wop, big band, classic country, jass or other classic genres. The album is titled Scott Bradlee's Postmodern Jukebox - Twist is the New Twerk (Spotify Link). The videos are fun because the musicians perform in character of the genre. Plus they have posted 20 more songs on Youtube (YouTube Channel Link). Some of my favorites are:

  • We Can't Stop - Miley Cyrus in 1950's Doo-Wop (YouTube Link) - 4:04
  • Just Dance - Lady Gaga in 1940's Jazz with Tap-Dancing (YouTube Link) - 4:09
  • Gentlemen - PSY in 1920's Gatsby (YouTube Link) - 3:45
  • Blurred Lines - Robin Thicke in Bluegrass Country (YouTube Link) - 3:31

5 - Happy Holidays, Y'all

I hope everyone is enjoying the holidays, the end of the year, and all of the Star Wars festivities. I am currently up in Chicago, where it is a comfortable 3 °F. But my focus is about to turn to the Rose Bowl on New Year's Day in L.A. Go Dawgs!!

OMINOUS PIC - This does not represent my 2018 outlook, but I thought this picture was interestingly terrifying.

https://www.reddit.com/r/thalassophobia/comments/7mmh8h/calm_before_the_storm/

BEST ACTION VIDEOS OF 2017 (Video) - Each year, GoPro release a compilation of the best videos submitted that year.  Although this serves as a long commercial, I enjoy these videos because they are visually stimulating and make you want to get outside and travel. (2.5 minutes)

A BETTER WEDDING BAND (Website Link) - I don't like jewelry and I was not looking forward to adding a ring to my daily accessories.  I have a nice wooden ring, but it isn't very comfortable.  After shopping around for an alternative, I found Groove.  They make silicone wedding bands, which many people use when exercising or when working with their hands (i.e. commercial fishing, management consulting).  Groove rings are better than other silicon bands because grooves inside of the band make them more breathable and comfortable. I went with a Groove Thin and wear it as my daily wedding band. ($30)

THE SMOKESCREEN THAT INFLUENCES ELECTIONS (Podcast) - I hope I don't become a broken record by recommending Reply All over and over, but in The Prophet, they investigate how a woman being assaulted ties to a large political conspiracy in Mexico. Warning - this episode does include descriptions of the assault. (39-minutes)

THE BLACKEST BLACK IS THE NEW BLACK (Video) - This short clip shows the blackest man-made substance in the world, Ventablack.  This is done using nano-tubes and is thought to be the closest color to a black hole that we have ever seen. (2.5 minutes)

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC'S TOP NATURE PHOTOS OF 2017 (Article) - National Geographic annually awards a photographer for wildlife, landscapes, aerials, and underwater photos.  This article shows the winning photos along with the honorable mentions. #14 and #20 are my faves. (20 pics)

COOKING VIDEOS INSPIRED BY FAMOUS FILMMAKERS (Videos) - I don't really get it, but Laura loves watching short cooking videos online.  She finds them mesmerizing.  I think this collection of cooking videos, done in the style of Wes Anderson (s'mores), Quentin Tarantino (pancakes), Alfonso Cuarón (spaghetti), and Michael Bay (waffles), is much more entertaining. (1-minute each)

HOPEFUL IMAGES OF 2017 (Article) - The Atlantic shares a compilation of positive and heartwarming images from this past year. Some are cute while others are emotional and powerful. (35 pics)

ARE YOU AFRAID OF ROBOT NINJAS? (Video) - This short video shows what BostonDynamics is doing with robots.  There are also blooper highlights, which reminds us that robots still have a way to go. (1-minute)

MUSIC - The Stranger Things theme song always puts me in a mood to listen to 80s synthwave music. If any of you are in the same boat, below are some fun options:

  • Stranger Things Theme Song - 10 Minute Remix (YouTube Link)
  • Lifelike - So Electric (YouTube Link)
  • New Retro Wave YouTube Channel (Link). Scroll down to "popular uploads." I click on a song, like the one by Miami Nights 1984, and let the YouTube playlist vortex take over.

MEMES - A few more than usual to close out 2017:

  • When high-fives go wrong (Link).  And another one (Link). This poor dude cannot catch a break
  • Escaped farm animals (sound on) (Link)
  • Millennial Jeopardy (Link)
  • Hitchhicking in Middle-earth (Link)

4 - Happy (day after) Thanksgiving!!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!! This is the time of year when I do all of my holiday shopping (online of course).  I also learned the true sign of marriage is when your wife asks for socks for Christmas. #basic

HOW TO HACK THE AIRLINE SYSTEM (Article) - This Rolling Stone article tells the story of Ben Schlappig, an airline frequent flyer hacker.  He has a better understanding of these programs than the companies running them and finds loopholes to exploit, allowing him to fly around the world for pennies on the dollar for the past 10 years.  For example, he purchased thousands of dollar-coins from the US mint on a credit card to get miles, then used the coins to pay off the credit card charges, racking up miles essentially for free. (20-minute read)

THE ONLY TIME I'VE CONTEMPLATED TAKING LSD (Podcast) - Reply All might be my favorite podcast. While the hosts are some of the funniest and nerdiest around, the show itself is an amazing dive deep into strange happenings on the internet and in technology. Through the month of August, they rebroadcasted some of their most popular episodes.  In this episode, one of the hosts experimented with micro-dosing, which is when you take trace amounts of a drug (LSD) in an attempt to experience some of the upside (often increased productivity or creativity) and minimize the downside of the drug.  I have listened to a lot of podcasts on micro-dosing but this was the first that actually follows someone's experiment.  Despite my teetotaling ways when it comes to drug use, this episode is fascinating. (44 minutes)

SPEAKING OF DRUGS (Article) - While on the topic, this article from Johns Hopkins Magazine covers some of the leading researchers of hallucinogens and findings from their research.  Again, this isn't something I would endorse but there do appear to be reasonable applications when appropriately supervised. (15-minute read)

ON TO A LIGHTER NOTE, ALCOHOL (App) - How do you shop for wine?  Maybe you get the same thing every time.  Or maybe like me, you have a price range and a type of wine in mind.  You scan the shelves for something that falls within the intersection of those things and then pick whichever bottle has the coolest label.  Or, you can try out Vivino.  You scan a wine label and it tells you the wine's rating, average price, awards, and reviews.  This makes it much easier to pick something up on a whim. (Plus, it's free)

INEXPENSIVE SUNGLASSES - I hate spending a lot on sunglasses because they are so easy to break or lose.  In addition, I have a narrow head and most sunglasses just don't look good on me.  But, my friend Barrett introduced me to Knockarounds, which are between $10-25.  They come in many different colors and styles and are great for traveling or doing anything where you may lose your shades.  More recently, I tried on some Sunskis from my friend Andrew, which are about $50, and are higher quality than Knockarounds, but still much cheaper than most sunglasses and these look great.  These are now my daily sunglasses.  Both companies sell polarized lenses and have frames that fit well for many head shapes.  I like the Knockaround Classics and the Sunski Seacliffs.

INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT - History Photographed shows a range of interesting photos representing what history would look like if it was posted on Instagram.  Some recent faves of mine include:

MUSIC - Ariel Pink (Wikipedia link) has always been kinda weird.  His music was close to being likable but went a little too off-the-rails for me to enjoy. But his recent album, Dedicated to Bobby Jameson (Spotify link), is really good. I would describe his music as a mix between 60s and 80s pop, with a little 80s punk in there. This whole album is great to listen to, but some of my favorites are:

MEME - This is what happens when you steal the last of the prune juice and apple sauce.
